The big divide
After some observation and thoughts about the coming elections, i thought i might as well pen down some of my 2 cents worth of views. I'm a very neutral party fyi :)i could be generalising and making sweeping statements.. but please take my views with a pinch of salt.
Here goes..
In my frank opinion, there are 2 groups of people or rather voters out there. The high income group and the middle/low income group. The high income group votes for the government and the middle/low income group votes for the opposition.
Why is that so? Basically, the middle/low income group (i shall call them the financially displaced group, poor doesn't sound nice i think :P)is sick and tired of being poor and being harassed by rising transportation, GST, education, utilities costs and the like. Therefore when somebody (opposition) promises cheaper bills, free HDB upgrading, naturally as bees to honey, the financially displaced group votes for the opposition.
The 2nd group, the financially intelligent group votes for the government. Why? Because they have utmost confidence in a government that is able to bring Singapore from 3rd world to 1st world in such a relatively short space of time as compared to our neighbours, a government that is able to create a vibrant society and economic stability to attract foreign investors and a stable political environment (as compared to countries with 50-50 ruling party/oppositions where they spend all their time trying to sabo each other and fist fights each other in parliament). This financially intelligent group with their financial wisdom and work smart attitude are able to expliot this stable and diverse financial playing field that the government has provided. Thus the financially intelligent group are able to reap great dividends from this and of course, will they complain?
On the other hand, the financially displaced group only knows how to complain and whine about their present situation without taking any serious action to change their current lifestyle. (Look at the number of coffeeshop aunties/uncles at the opposition rallies). They never make use of the skills upgrading packages offered to them, some never even make the effort and some already condemned it as crap even before attempting to try it out. Some even give excuses like 'oh, i'm too old to learn' or 'It's just another scheme by the government to make us pay more'. So, in general, the financially displaced group only knows how to sit around and bitch about the current state of affairs without doing anything realistic. They are concerned only about the present, not the future. They only want things to be free and cheap, even at the expense of losing our country's competitiveness in the global playing field, this mentality in turns breeds laziness and over-dependence on the government. All in all, this will only serves to cheapen our 1st world country to the point of being similar to.. (need i elaborate more?)
In summary, the financially intelligent group is independant and is wise enough to make things happen for himself instead of just loafing around and waiting for things to happen. The financially displaced group is of course, sitting around, buying 4-D and hoping for a windfall.
If i were to vote, i will vote for the party that is able to give me a stable political scene; and a diverse financial and social environment for me to grow my talents.
That's my 2 cents.
